Read It Again?

Kat mentioned something in her comments the other day about how she rarely reads books twice or watches the same movie twice.
I've thought about this topic quite a bit, ever since my global studies teacher in high school told us he would never read a book twice because there so many books to read. I took what he said quite seriously, and avoided reading a book for a second time.

The thing is, a year after I've read a book, I have forgotten a lot of details. So it's been quite beneficial to re-read some of my favorites, for example Harry Potter, especially right before the movies come out. I also like to read books and then get rid of them. But sometimes, I so thoroughly enjoy reading a book (like Adrian Mole or the Shopaholic series, for example) that the idea of parting with the book is dreadfully sad.

I also rarely re-watch movies. So many movies are made that I barely have time to watch all of the ones I want to. Yet, there are times when watching a movie you love is a bit like spending time with an old friend. (in many ways, the way I feel about my favorite music)

So while I rarely re-watch movies or re-read books, I do it sometimes and have found it's quite a good experience. Sometimes you pick up on things you didn't the first time that make the experience all the more rewarding and enhance the richness of the story.

How about y'all?

Amy,
The funny thing is that when I'm "forced" to re-watch a movie...I really enjoy it.

For example, if a good movie is on tv or if we visit a friend's house and they want to watch a movie I've seen, I almost always really enjoy it.

The past two weeks, I've been watching the same two movies over and over and over. I bought them and put them on my iPod to keep me awake for those middle of the night feedings. I've found that there are many subtle things I missed when I watched the movies the first time, but now on round 6, I'm cracking up before it even gets to the funny part.

All that to say, I think there is great merit in rewatching or rereading something....I just have a hard time doing so when there are so many new things out there to be read and watched.

Amy,
I also rarely rewatch movies or reread books - like you, I barely have time to read or watch the first time. But - I do have a few favorites. Like the movie Emma for example. LOVE IT and I even own it. I just love how the characters feel such a burden to be kind and show mercy on those less fortunate - like they know they are being looked up to and they want to prove they are worthy of that. Just a longing for things to really be like that I guess. Gotta love Knightly. There are a few others that are like that - that are just as good or better the second time around. As far as books - I have a couple that I purposely reread every once in a while. They are books that inspire me in my work as wife and mother or inspire me in my Christian life. I could read Edith Schaeffer's books over and over. And Stepping Heavenward is also one of my favorites. Sometimes it is really worth it to read it again!

Since being overseas, I've discovered the art of read it and pass it on. I don't have the space to be constantly taking books back and forth between countries. I do have a few books that I simply love and won't part with. Those will go with me where ever I go. But, most of the books I've read over the last few years either belong to others or ended up in the school library for others to enjoy.
Movies are pretty much the same. I do have more movies then books though because they tend to be more light weight, but I have to really like it to actually own it.

I've been (ahem) blessed w/ a terrible memory, so re-reading a book is enjoyable after a couple years. Same w/ movies.

Kat...what two movies have you been watching over and over?

Leah, I haven't seen Emma but once! What is Stepping Heavenward?

Lisa, I left about three bags of books behind in Japan for my roommates when I left. I admire your ability to part with books so easily, I do try.

Kathryn, how often do you reread?

Matt--ha, that's sort of what I was trying to say! I have a bad memory and can benefit from a second read-through.

I've never been really particular about either. I enjoy good books and movies and often re-read/re-watch if I have time (usually a few years later) just so I can have the experience again. I've never really thought about it that way though -- not re-reading books because there are so many.

I always save books thinking I will reread, but never do. Rarely have time to rewatch movies either except for the Christmas yearly favorites!

i'll reread once. *don't think i've ever done more than that?!*
