So...I'm having a hard time getting attached to any of the contestants or feeling overly impressed with any of them.
How about you all?
And is it just me or is there a lot of attitude? (I miss Melinda!)
I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would Asia'h. (I kind of like David Archuleta as well)
PLUS, one of the girls looks like Carrie Underwood!! What's up with that?!? If she wins, keep your eyes peeled for a Daughtry look-alike in season 8!

American Idol So Far

It's probably too early to get "attached" to anyone at this point anyway. Usually the Final 12 is when things really start to come into focus a little better.
I do think that overall, this is the most talented bunch of finalists ever, but you're sure right about the attitudes. Lots of severe narcissism and sense of entitlement. Some seem to have decided that "Talking snotty to Simon" gives you some sort of street cred or something. It usually just makes you seem sort of nasty and unpleasant.
They mentioned something else that didn't really occur to me until they said it: Many of these people have literally "grown up" with American Idol being a major part of the cultural landscape. Most of them grew into adulthood (if they're even there yet) with American Idol being The Biggest Thing in The Universe. I'm sure that changes how they view this whole thing, for better or for worse.
There really is potentially a lot at stake, considering what the show has done for a few of the more successful finalists. But even so, I think that a little genuine humility goes a long way with the public, and increases a contestant's likability.
Whoo-hoo! I've been waiting for you to post something about AI.
I agree with Hammer in that it's too early, but I really disagree that it's the most talented group. I was highly disappointed this week with the lack of talent. Yeah, they can all sing, but I really only see a few that have "it" as Simon says. (Ha! Simon says. Get it?)
So far, I like Asia'h, Carly, David, Michael, Ramiele, and Syesha.
I suppose you're right that it's too early. Hopefully, someone will endear themselves to me! :)
I forgot about Ramiele, I really like her, too.
And hopefully they'll all calm down a little bit. Maybe Idol ought to take them on the trip to Africa this year for Idol Gives Back. ;)
In any case...here's hoping for a fun season!
MC - Do you have a specific season (or seasons) in mind where there was more talent overall? I think there have been individual artists emerge from AI who are more talented than any of the current crop (e.g. Carrie Underwood), but not the entire batch of finalists as a whole. But hey, I'm all ears if you've got a case to make. :-)
I think that's one of the fun things for my family about AI -- we can all have strong "expert" opinions about the show, and have lots of fun arguing... er, I mean talking about them.
My overall sense is that the nationwide talent pool is huge, and more and more truly talented people keep showing up to audition, knowing that AI is a substantial shortcut to the whole process. Especially when compared to laboring in complete anonymity at smoky clubs for years and years, and never getting your "big break".
