I read some interesting books this week, The Hunted by Mike Dellosso, The Memory of Water by Karen White, and now I'm reading Matrimony by Joshua Henkin. These books are all quite different from each other and very enjoyable.
Today I went to Barnes and Noble to browse and spotted a book shelf they were selling that you use to hold a book while you read. I thought about it for my students, because some of them like to prop the books up as they read and this would make it easier. Then I wondered (of course) if maybe I would like to have it. Generally, I don't have a problem with just holding a book, but I thought it might be interesting.
I broke down and bought The Host by Stephanie Meyer I've been eyeing this book for awhile and decided to take the plunge. But the store clerk said...oh I need to try to read this again. I almost wanted to put it back immediately. She said she found it slow and hard to get into. I really don't think store clerks should say such things if they want to sell books! But worst is that I read so much that a slow book just isn't going to cut it unless I'm terribly committed to it.
So have any of you read The Host? Was it good or slow and hard to get into? Need feedback! By the way, I haven't even read Twilight yet!

I have heard it is just as good as the Twilight series. I am saving the book to read on Becky's Online Group Read next month. Come join us!
What a diverse collection of books you've been reading. I do that kind of mix, too. I read an excerpt of Karen White's book and I really want to read it, too!
I haven't read anything but good things about The Host. However, I haven't read anything by this author.
What an odd comment from a clerk in a book store!
I haven't read any Stephenie Meyers yet but I've only seen good reviews of The Host. My daughter's best friend is reading it now (she's 10) and so far loves it.
I agree, not a good way to sell books.
I've only read the first of the Twilight series and loved it. It was hard not to love it. The Host is on my TBR list.
Well, I've read all of Stephenie Meyer's novels, and if you can get through the Twilight series you can definitely get through The Host. It's really slow going for a while, but the story and characters are interesting enough. My favorite quote about Stephenie Meyers' writing is that she never uses a sentence when a paragraph will do, and that is especially true in this case. :)
I haven't read the Twilight series either, but I'd like to. I finally finished the book I've been reading since April. I'm not usually this slow about a book, but I just never could get that into it.
