Lots of things but if I have to choose one to mention here it's when the story or characters stay in your thoughts for days or even weeks after you finish the book.
The author needs to create characters that you care about, so you want to follow and find out what happens.
I also tend to like when books are subtle. Small nuances that aren't necessarily noticed individually, but when you put the book down, they collectively cause you just think, "Wow! She can really write well."
I think the one thing that makes a book good to me is when the author makes you care about the characters. So that you hate for the story to end and/or can't wait to read the next book in the series. :)
Boy, you know how to ask the tough questions.
Hmmmm....
Well, a lot would depend on my mood. From there, it's all up to the author. :)
any book where the characters grip me, where I feel like I know them personally or like I can relate to them is a good book. And it REALLY helps when you can't guess the end of the book within the first couple pages. I hate that!
