First of all, I must apologize to Nat who was a wonderful partner even though I was a lame one. Please go read all about her try something new mini-challenge here.
To further prove my lameness, I said Etta was not going to count as my try something new book, but the truth of the matter? One western in this month was enough for me. I did buy another one, but I'm holding off on it. So these questions pertain to Etta by Gerald Kolpan.
What did you choose to read for the Try Something New Mini-Challenge?
A Western!
Why had you hesitated to read this type of book before?
Hmm. Westerns don't normally appeal to me. Western movies are not my thing, so it's hard to imagine I'd like the books. I also generally don't like the speech, the customs, or the characters. I think of it as really being a male dominated genre.
How was it? Did you enjoy it?
In the words of Randy Jackson, it was just alright for me. The book itself wasn't thrilling or spectacularly written so that probably didn't help.
How did it compare to your pre-conception about this type of book?
Actually it matched up pretty close. Even though this book happened to have on strong woman out in the West, there was lots of shooting and crimes and not rich enough character development.
How likely are you to pick up another book by this same author or in this genre?By this author? Unlikely. One day I'd like to read Lonesome Dove, though, which qualifies as a Western. The book I originally bought for this challenge is by the same author as Lonesome Dove but much shorter, called Leaving Cheyenne.
Thanks to Nymeth for a fun challenge even if I sort of failed.

Silly gal, I wouldn't call this a failure at all!
Hmmm...been looking forward to Etta. Now I'm not too sure.
lol-I'm on a roll. I didn't even know Etta was a western I had wanted to read it but kind of doubtful now-westerns are not my thing generally.
I'm sure Nat forgives you! And nope, this doesn't count as failure in my book. Not in the least! Like I told you before, you were so brave to try westerns. They don't appeal to me either, but Lonesome Dove is one I'd like to read sometime.
I haven't come across many westerns in my reading. I am sure that if the right one came along, I'd be more than willing to give it a try though.
I have ETTA on my TBR; I get to it (eventually), but this will be "something different" for me, too.
This mini-challenge definitely pushed a lot of us to go outside our normal reading, so it was a great overall success (don't be so hard on yourself!)
Hey, shouldn't that be "Dog! It was just alright for me."
