My recommendation definitely depends who I'm recommending the book to. I make sure to always let people know of any material they may not be comfortable with.
As far as the writing, pacing. Books with tons of description or excessively slow pacing bore me, so I don't recommend them.
And I don't recommend any that have explicit language or sex or immorality. I usually don't get past the first chapter of one those. If it offends me, there's a good chance it will offend my friends.
