I feel like I've been neglecting some of my favorite writers of faith lately so I was happy to get an ARC of this to review. And in other happy making news, I have two copies to give away to anyone with a US or Canadian address. But before we get to that...
I really love Stephen Mansfield's writing. I don't feel like the most qualified person to review nonfiction--I'm actually super intimidated by it. I'm always so impressed by the sharp critical eye everyone else has for it. But I can tell you what I like and I really love his writing. I think he humanizes people in the public eye through the lens of faith. And as someone deeply weary from election season and all the dehumanizing that goes on, I love that. And of course I also just like his style!
I've enjoyed his books in the past so reading about a historical figure, especially one who's faith journey is so fascinating and who is almost more mythological than real in our imaginations intrigues me.
I've only just started this book, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it. Mansfield doesn't write with an agenda to prove Lincoln was a Christian, on the contrary he seeks to understand the truth of Lincoln's spiritual life in order to better understand how it influences us now. (this is always his goal) That's the kind of spiritual biography I enjoy and I'm hoping to learn more about Lincoln with this one!
And it's timely what with the big movie coming out and everything!
